Atha ṣoḍaśamukhī rudrākṣa dhāraṇavidhiḥ (अथ षोडशमुखी रुद्राक्ष धारणविधिः)

Purpose: To obtain all the four puruṣārthas: dharma (righteousness), artha (wealth), kāma (desires) and mokṣa (liberation) by wearing the sixteen-faced Rudrākṣa bead.
Initiation: Required.
Special Note: The benefits of this Rudrākṣa are to be considered the same as that of the four-faced Rudrākṣa.
1. Prayogaḥ (प्रयोगः) –
evaṃ dhyātvā mānasopacāraiḥ saṃpūjya kuryājjapasahasrakaṃ tadantaramābhimukhyasāmīpyaṃ ghaṭopari tāmrapātraṃ nidhāya tatra rudrākṣaṃ kṣiptvā paṅktiprāṇāyāyaṃ kṛtvā ।
paścāt vāme jalapātraṃ dhṛtvā jatra tale savyahastaṃ dhṛtvā dakṣiṇapāṇinā sahasrajapaṃ kuryāt ।
punastasyopari jalaṃ kṣipet rudrākṣaṃ dhārayet ।
evaṃ sarvatra vidhirjñayaḥ ॥
एवं ध्यात्वा मानसोपचारैः संपूज्य कुर्याज्जपसहस्रकं तदन्तरमाभिमुख्यसामीप्यं घटोपरि ताम्रपात्रं निधाय तत्र रुद्राक्षं क्षिप्त्वा पङ्क्तिप्राणायायं कृत्वा ।
पश्चात् वामे जलपात्रं धृत्वा जत्र तले सव्यहस्तं धृत्वा दक्षिणपाणिना सहस्रजपं कुर्यात् ।
पुनस्तस्योपरि जलं क्षिपेत् रुद्राक्षं धारयेत् ।
एवं सर्वत्र विधिर्ज्ञयः ॥
Meaning: After contemplating in the mind, the dhyāna of the mantra, one must complete mantra japa for a 1000 count. Next, place the associated rudrākṣa(s) relevant to the mantra, in a copper mug/jug/vessel on top of a copper plate preferably and place it in front of ourselves. Perform five rounds of Prāṇāyāma. Then place a water jug to the left. Using the right hand, perform another round of mantra japa for a 1000 count. Next, sprinkle water from the water jug upon the rudrākṣa(s) placed in front and then wear them. This same procedure should be repeated for all faceted rudrākṣas with their relevant mantras.
2. Viniyogaḥ (विनियोगः) –

अस्य श्री ब्रह्मा मन्त्रस्य ।
भार्गव ऋषिः ।
अनुष्टुप् छन्दः ।
ब्रह्मा देवता ।
वाँ बीजं ।
क्राँ शक्तिः ।
मम अभीष्टसिद्ध्यर्थे रुद्राक्ष धारणार्थे जपे विनियोगः ॥
Meaning: This prayer/mantra japa is to invoke Śrī Brahmā and perform His mantra japa to obtain His complete grace in the fulfillment of the four puruṣārthas: dharma (righteousness), artha (wealth), kāma (desires) and mokṣa (liberation) and to energize and activate the sixteen-faced Rudrākṣa bead for wearing purposes.
The sage (ṛṣiḥ) is Śrī Bhārgava. The meter (chandas) for the mantra is Anuṣṭup and the deity(devatā) is Śrī Brahmā. The seed (bīja) mantra is Vām̐, the power (śakti) of the mantra rests with the phrase Krām̐.
3. Ṛṣyādi nyāsa ( ऋष्यादि न्यास ) -

Thus ends the six-part Karāṅga nyāsa. |
5. Ṣaḍāṅga nyāsaḥ (षडाङ्गन्यासः) –

Touch the eyes with the right index and ring fingers, with the middle finger touching the ājñā cakra. |

om̐ aim̐ śrīm̐ astrāya phaṭ । |
ॐ ऐँ श्रीँ अस्त्राय फट् । |
Open up the left palm and strike it three times with index and middle fingers of the right hand. |
7 |
इति षडाङ्ग न्यासः ॥ |
Thus ends the six-part Ṣaḍāṅga nyāsa. |
bhūr-bhuva-ssuvarom-iti digbandhaḥ ॥
भूर्भुवस्सुवरोम् इति दिग्बन्धः ॥
Meaning: May the directions be charmed and bound, to prevent any external influences of the triads – the Earth, atmosphere and the heavens.
6. Dhyānam (ध्यानम् ) –
praṇamya śirasā śaśvadaṣṭavaktraṃ caturmukham ।
gāyatrī sahitaṃ devaṃ namāmi vidhimīśvaram ॥
प्रणम्य शिरसा शश्वदष्टवक्त्रं चतुर्मुखम् ।
गायत्री सहितं देवं नमामि विधिमीश्वरम् ॥
Meaning – Salutations and deep reverence with our heads bowed to the everlasting eight-faced fearsome Lord Bhairava and the four-faced Creator Lord Brahma. Salutations to the Divine Mother Gāyatrī and all gods! This is the procedure for the activation of the four faced Rudrākṣa favored by Lord Īśvarā.

Hold the fingers of each palm in a folded manner with the tips of the fingers of both hands touching each other and the thumbs facing the heart, in a Namaste position. |

Thus ends the Pañcapūjā. |
8. Mantraḥ (मन्त्रः) –
om̐ vām̐ krām̐ tām̐ hām̐ aim̐ śrīm̐ ।
ॐ वाँ क्राँ ताँ हाँ ऐँ श्रीँ ।
Meaning: This is a seven syllabled mantra with each syllable representing a bīja (seed) mantra. The bīja mantras are described below. –
- The bīja (seed) mantra om̐ (ॐ) consists of – ‘au’ => healing and deep cleansing, ‘m̐’ => removes misery. Ushers in auspiciousness.
- The bīja (seed) mantra vām̐ (वाँ) consists of – ‘va’ indicating Varuṇa/Jala (water) denoting a thirst and quest for achievements of desired wishes and objectives, ‘ā’ => Ākarṣiṇi devi representing a double ‘a’, which is both Śiva and Śakti. She therefore represents the devolution of the Supreme Being into the five aspects of Creation (Brahma), Preservation (Viṣṇu), Destruction (Rudra), Annihilation (īśvara) and Resurrection (Sadāśiva). The letter ‘m̐’ is for removal of all miseries and facilitation of self-realization and ultimate liberation. The vām̐ bīja is also the Kāmeśvarī-vāṇa bīja mantra representing the pentads and the five arrows of cupid, Lord Kāma granting all wishes and the fulfillment of all desires.
- The Sindhūra bīja (seed) mantra krām̐ (क्राँ) indicates fierce transformative energy that can break through all karmic barriers and transform the state of our lives.
- The bīja (seed) mantra tām̐ (ताँ) consists of – ‘ta’ => Tāmasya Devi Mātṛkā who signifies the expulsion of all darkness, hatred, jealously and other vices, ushering in compassion and true unconditional love. She is also the giver of fortune. She takes up the Kuṇḍalini to the Anāhata cakra., The bīja ‘ta’ is also associated with Śrī Tārā Devi, the One who leads us through the ocean of life and death (saṃsāra). The bīja ‘ā’ of Ākarṣiṇi devi represents a double ‘a’, which is both Śiva and Śakti. She therefore represents the devolution of the Supreme Being into the five aspects of Creation (Brahma), Preservation (Viṣṇu), Destruction (Rudra), Annihilation (īśvara) and Resurrection (Sadāśiva). By definition She represents a great power of attraction and expansion. The bīja ‘m̐’ denotes removal of all miseries and is a facilitator of self-realization and ultimate liberation. Overall, the bīja eradicates all vices, grants an expansion of consciousness, wish fulfillment and facilitates the removal of all miseries leading us to self-realization and ultimate liberation.
- The Śiva bīja (seed) mantra hām̐ (हाँ ) consists of - the letter ‘h’ representing Brahman/Śiva signifying auspiciousness, ‘ā’ representing massive power of attraction, expansion and assimilation, ‘m̐’ is for removal of all miseries and facilitation of self-realization and ultimate liberation. Overall, the bīja provides significant expansion of our consciousness and helps in overcoming all the obstacles to usher in auspiciousness and fulfillment.
- The Aiśvarya mātṛkā and Sarasvatī bīja aim̐ (ऐँ), represents and bestows immense knowledge, mastery in arts and amazing creativity.
- The bīja (seed) mantra śrīm̐ (श्रीँ) consists of – ‘śa’ indicates Mahālakṣmī, repha ‘ra’ indicates dhana or wealth, ‘ī’ indicates tuṣṭi or satisfaction, ‘m̐’ denotes nāda indicating parā or śakti and vindu indicates duḥkhahara or removal of all miseries.

12. Samarpaṇam (समर्पणम्) –
guhyādi guhya goptvātvam gṛhaṇāsmat kṛtaṃ japaṃ ।
siddhirbhavatu me deva tvat prasadān mayī sthirā ॥
गुह्यादि गुह्य गोप्त्वात्वम् गृहणास्मत् कृतं जपं ।
सिद्धिर्भवतु मे देव त्वत् प्रसदान् मयी स्थिरा ॥
Meaning: May these secret offerings of mantra japa offered at my dwelling, yield the expected benefits and remain with us at all times by your benevolent grace O Lord!
