श्री महागणपतिक्रमः Śrī Mahāgaṇapatikramaḥ
चतुरावृत्तितर्पणम् Caturāvṛttitarpaṇam
I. Introduction:
Mahāgaṇapati plays significant role in Śrī Vidyā. Generally first step in Śrī Vidyā initiation is Mahāgaṇapati mantra. Apart from mantra japa, tarpaṇam is done for Mahāgaṇapati to seek His Grace for health, wealth, knowledge, happiness, liberation, etc. He also removes any possible obstacles in seeking Her Grace. For attaining Her Grace, one needs to have to strong body, pure mind and good knowledge. When all these work together perfectly, subject to one’s karmic impressions, Liberation is guranteed. It is also said that by perrforming this tarpaṇam all evil effects are removed (vigṇavināyaka pāta namaste|| विग्णविनायक पात नमस्ते॥). Number of tarpaṇa-s is 444 per session.
Mahāgaṇapati mūlamantra has 28 bījākṣara-s. 444 tarpaṇa-s are arrived as follows.
1. Mahāgaṇapati mūlamantra tarpaṇa-s 12
2. Tarpaṇa-s each bījākṣara 28 x 4 times 112
3. At the end of each bījākṣara tarpaṇa one
mūlamantra tarpaṇa 28 x 4 times 112
4. There are 26 āvaraṇa devata-s in His yantra.
Four tarpaṇa-s for each āvaraṇa devata-s 26 x 4 104
5. At the end of tarpaṇa-s for each āvaraṇa devata
four mūlamantra tarpaṇa-s 26 x 4 104
6. Total tarpaṇa-s 444
This is to be done for a contious period of 44 days. This period varies according to traditions. Gnerally either 41 or 44 days are followed. It is also done for one day to one year.
II. Requirements For Ganpati Chaturavritti Tarpanam:
Turmeric powder, water in a vessel (preferably a copper vessel which can hold sufficient water for performing 444 tarpaṇa-s), powdered condiemnts comprising of cardomom, clove, edible camphor, sandal paste, saffron, etc. A plate for offering tarnpana and in this plate Gaṇapati is to be made using turmeric powder mixed with a few drops of water. This turmeric Gaṇapati is to be adored with sandal paste and kumkum. Wherever possible, turmeric Gaṇapati can be placed on a beetal leaf. In case beetel leaf is not available a small copper or silver place can be used to keep turmeric Gaṇapati. Alternatively, tarpaṇa-s can be done on Mahāgaṇapati yantra or on His idol. Performing on a yanta is ideal. Apart from the above, as usual pañcapātra and uttaraṇi are needed.
There are various methods of offering tarpaṇa-s. Gnerally a flower is held between the middle and ring fingers of the right hand; alternatively crystal, rudrākṣa, gold ring, etc are held in the place of flowers. There is no need to have any of these, when none of them are available.
III. Preliminaries:
a. Ācamana:
Ācamana is a procedure where water is taken in the right palm, which is sipped after reciting each of these mantras.
ॐ गं आत्मतत्वाय स्वाहा। om gaṁ ātmatatvāya svāhā |
ॐ गं विद्यातत्वाय स्वाहा। om gaṁ vidyātatvāya svāhā |
ॐ गं शिवतत्वाय स्वाहा। om gaṁ śivatatvāya svāhā |
ॐ गं सर्वतत्वाय स्वाहा॥ om gaṁ sarvatatvāya svāhā ||
Once this is done, right palm should be washed and dried.
b. Prāṇāyāmaḥ:
Do prāṇāyāma by reciting Mahāgaṇapati mūlamantra. Fold index and middle fingers of the right palm. Use the little finger and the ring finger to close the left nostrils and the thumb to close the right nostril. Inhale through the left nostril, hold for a few seconds and exhale through the right nostril. It is ideal to end prāṇāyāma by inhaling through left nostril.
(Further reading on prāṇāyāma: According to Śiva Svarodaya it is always better to inhale through the left nostril few times so that normal breathing (svara) itself changes to left nostril inhalation. When svara or flow of breath is changed to left nostril, it brings in further auspiciousness. In particular svara flow through left nostril is very good while practicing mantras. There are several verses about this in Śiva Svarodaya. In this present case, it is better to inhale through left nostril by reciting the following mantra, hold within for a few seconds and simply exhlae through the right nostril. This can be repeated several times and this is different from nāḍi śodhana Prāṇāyāma.)
This is Mahāgaṇapati mūlamantra:
ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं क्लीं ग्लौं गं गणपतये वरवरद सर्वजनं मे वशमानय स्वाहा॥
om śrīṁ hrīṁ klīṁ glauṁ gaṁ gaṇapataye varavarada sarvajanaṁ me vaśamānaya svāhā ||
c . Gurupādukā worship:
As Mahāgaṇapati Chaturavrutti tarpaṇam is mainly followed under Śrī Vidyā cult, one has to worship his or her Guru-s. If one does not have a guru, then the following mantra can be used.
सदाशिवसमारम्भां शंकराचार्यमध्यमां।
अस्मदाचार्यपर्यन्तं वन्दे गुरु परंपरां॥
sadāśivasamārambhāṁ śaṁkarācāryamadhyamāṁ |
asmadācāryaparyantaṁ vande guru paraṁparāṁ ||
(Beginning from Lord Sadāśiva, through Śaṁkarācārya and up to my Guru, I pay my obeisance to all the Gurus)
d. Saṁkalapaḥ:
शुक्लांबरधरं विष्णुं शसिवर्णं चतुर्भुजम्।
प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविग्नोप शान्तये॥
śuklāṁbaradharaṁ viṣṇuṁ śasivarṇaṁ caturbhujam |
prasannavadanaṁ dhyāyet sarvavignopa śāntaye ||
(Meaning: Eternally present, wearing white garments, shining like the moon, having four hands, whose face is full of Bliss, I worship you to remove all the obstacles (while performing this pūjā. This is addressed to Mahāgaṇapati Himself.)
This saṁkalapa is based on Śri Chakra navāvaraṇa pūjā. Without changing anything, this saṁkalapa can be made. However, other saṁkalapa-s can also be followed.

Note: Uniformly lalitānāma is used in the entire saṁkalapa to avoid any confusion.
* This saṁkalapa covers every thing that we aspire for. According to this saṁkalapa, we seek His appearance before us and our desire to talk to Him.
e. Prayer to Sun god:
By looking at the kalaśa, recite the following mantra.
ब्रह्माण्डोदरतीर्तीनि करैः स्पृष्टानि ते स्वे।
तेन स्त्येन मे देव तीर्था देहि दिवाकरे॥
brahmāṇḍodaratīrtīni karaiḥ spṛṣṭāni te sve |
tena styena me deva tīrthā dehi divākare ||
f. Invoking Gaṅgā Devi (river Ganges) in the kalaśa:
Now take the kalaśa filled with water and mix the powdered condiments. Decorate the kalaśa with sndal paste, kumkum and flowers.
For performing 444 tarpaṇa-s, lot of water is needed. There are two options. One, to have a big vessel to hold enough water to do 444 tarpaṇa-s and by lifting the same, do the tarpaṇa-s. Second, invoke Gaṅgā in a bigger vessel and then transfer water in small quantities to pañcapātra and by using uttaraṇi, do tarpaṇa-s. If pañcapātra is used, then pañcapātra should also be decortated with sandal paste and kumkum. Pañcapātra and uttaraṇi used for ācamana should never be used for doing tarpaṇa-s. There should always be two pañcapātra and uttaraṇi, one for the God/Goddess and another for the self.
Close the vessel at its mouth by placing the right palm and recite the following mantra.
आवहयामि त्वां देवि तर्पणायेह सुन्दरि।
एहि गङ्गे नमस्तुभ्यं सर्वतीर्थसमन्विते॥
āvahayāmi tvāṁ devi tarpaṇāyeha sundari |
ehi gaṅge namastubhyaṁ sarvatīrthasamanvite ||
Now using aṅkuśa mudra (folding all other fingers except the index finger of the right palm) and by touching the water in the kalaśa recite the following bījākṣara-s:
ह्वां ह्वीं ह्वूं ह्वैं ह्वौं ह्वः hvāṁ hvīṁ hvūṁ hvaiṁ hvauṁ hvaḥ
(These bījākṣara-s lead to the expansion and kindling of amṛta bījā, which is recited next)
After reciting the above bījākṣara-s, recite वं vaṁ (amṛta bījā) seven times. After this, remove the index finger.
At this stage, the water in the kalaśa beocmes Gaṅgā water and fully endowed with Divine Nectar. This is a simplified version of consecrating viśeṣa arghya druing navāvaraṇa pūjā.
IV. Śrī Mahāgaṇapati pūjā:
Now if one has Mahāgaṇapati yantra that should be placed in the vessel in which tarpaṇa-s will be done. It would be ideal to place the yantra on a pīṭha (possibly a wooden plank or something like this). If yantra is available, then after placing the yantra as above, turmeric Gaṇapati can be placed on beetel leaf and then placed on this yantra. If there is Mahāgaṇapati idol is available, it should be used instead of turmeric Gaṇapati. If none of them are available, Mahāgaṇapati yantra, which is shown here can be drawn on the vessel where tarpaṇa-s are offered.
The follwoing is not detailed invocation as done in regular prāṇapratiṣṭhā. This is simple invocation using dhyāna verse and nyāsa-s as used in japa procedure, which is given below.

V. Śrī Mahāgaṇapati Chaturavritti tarpaṇam:
a. Understanding tarpaṇa-s:
This is how we derive 28 bījākṣara-s. While doing tarpaṇa, bindu is added to all the bījākṣara-s. For example, let us take the seventh bījākṣara, which is ग (ga). If a bindu is placed on the top of the bījā, then ग (ga) becomes गं (gaṁ). This is given in the tarpaṇa mantras below. For each bījā four tarpaṇa-s are done and this is followed by four tarpaṇa-s of mūlamatra. It is also important to note that all tarpaṇa-s for 28 bījākṣara-s should done by suffixing स्वाहा। महागणपतिं तर्पयामि॥ svāhā | mahāgaṇapatiṁ tarpayāmi || Similalry the first four bījākṣara-s of mūlamatra are to to be suffixed to each bījākṣara tarpaṇa. The first four bījākṣara-s are ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं क्लीं (om śrīṁ hrīṁ klīṁ).

Pranam,
Thank you very much for this detailed procedure - although it is a little complicated....I will have to modify the pre and post prayers to my simple ability, till I am able to do it as instructed. As a woman, is it OK to break the Tarpanam in between the 44 days and continue afterward?
Secondly, as I was studying your Tarpanam Procedure, I was wondering:
#229 - it is given as om śrīṁ hrīṁ hāṁ svāṁ svāhā | mahāgaṇapatiṁ tarpayāmi ||
should it be om śrīṁ hrīṁ klīṁ hāṁ svāhā | mahāgaṇapatiṁ tarpayāmi ||
#237 - it is given as om śrīṁ hrīṁ klīṁ svāhā | mahāgaṇapatiṁ tarpayāmi ||
should it be om śrīṁ hrīṁ klīṁ śrīṁ svāhā | mahāgaṇapatiṁ tarpayāmi ||
Thank you very much,

Glad to have helped. But I just saw the English version of #229:om śrīṁ hrīṁ klīṁ hāṁ svāṁ svāhā | mahāgaṇapatiṁ tarpayāmi ||
Maybe svam should be deleted?
If I want to avoid the break in between, can I do the Tarpanam as follows? Chant in my mind or chant silently by moving my tongue only and perform the actions for all 44 days?
Thank you,

I started the Tarpanam yesterday on Ganesh Chaturthi with modifications in the beginning by praying to my departed father, family God, and then to Maha Ganapati to make it a successful endeavor; continued with the Tarpanam process and ended with naivedhyam.
Today I am not able to do it at the same time though and will have to do it in the evening. That concerns me. Is it OK to do it at different times everyday?

Both are different.
In caturāvṛttitarpaṇam, gnerally a flower is held between the middle and ring fingers of the right hand; alternatively crystal, rudrākṣa, gold ring, etc are held in the place of flowers. There is no need to have any of these, when none of them are available.
In In navāvaraṇa pūjā flowers are to be taken in the left hand. In the right hand, tweezers is to be taken with a piece of ginger held between the tweezers. At the time of saying pūjayāmi flowers from the left hand are to be placed. At the time of saying tarpayāmi, the ginger piece is to be dipped into viśeṣa arghya using the tweezers and a drop of viśeṣa arghya is to be offered in the same place where flowers are placed.

Śrī Mahāgaṇapati caturāvṛtti tarpanam is for accomplishing the four (caturā) tasks (vṛtti-s), namely dharma (righteousness, justice, virtues etc.), artha (material wealth, accomplishments etc.), kāma (desires, goals etc) and mokṣa (self-realization and liberation). Lord Mahāgaṇapati in the Gaṇapatya or the Gaṇeśa tradition, is the manifested Supreme singular reality or Brahman. The śloka referred to here is the general obstacle removing verse of Lord Viṣṇu, which is also His dhyāna śloka. It is very auspicious to invoke, before embarking on a very important prayer and sādhanā, such as this tarpanam. It is also very apt for this tarpanam, as the four arms (catur-bhuja) here refer to the same four aims of life, for the complete fulfillment of life’s purpose. Most of Lord Gaṇeśa’s forms have the four arms indicating the same as well. Related to the Śrī Mahāgaṇapati dhyāna, the ten arms are related to the seed syllables (bīja-s) and can be described as follows, showing the descent of the Supreme super-consciouness manifesting into the Creation. – Om̐ is Śabda Brahman or the Ultimate reality manifested as sound and this refers to the entire mantra and form of Lord Mahāgaṇapati. Śrīm̐ is the fructification bīja of the Divine Mother Mahālakṣmī and in this context, refers to the hind arms (from the top, the 1st set of arms) holding the discus (cakra), slicing through all karma accrued in the causal body and the lotus (padma), represents the evolution of the consciousness to it’s highest state (turiya) granting self-realization and liberation. This is also the stage of destruction of all attachments from the material world and merging into the Supreme singular reality. Hrīm̐ is the Mahāmāyā bīja of the cosmic virtual reality, referring to the hind arms (2nd set from the top) holding the trident piercing the tripurā – the triads such as the physical, astral and causal bodies etc, as well as the noose (pāśa), that binds the Creation to the Divine Mother Mahāmāyā. This operates in all the three bodies and seeds karma. This is the preparatory stage for Creation. Klīm̐ is the Kāma bīja, indicating all desires and referring to the hind arms (3rd set from the top) holding the sugarcane bow representing cupid’s arrows to strike desire and the blue lilly indicating amorous love and passion. This is the stage of Creation and the consciousness binding to the physical body. Glaum̐ is the Pṛthvi or Pārthiva bīja indicating Earth and all terrestrial worlds, referring once again to the hind arms (4th set from the top) holding a mace (sometimes an axe or even a plough) and paddy, separately in each of the arms. The mace/axe/plough are for sculpting the terra and making it feasible for the seeding of life forms. It is also for breaking the ground, minerals etc for building and making the best of our material existence. The paddy here refers to food grains for nourishment. This is the stage of Preservation and Sustenance. Gam̐ is the Gaṇeśa bīja indicating removal of all obstacles. It refers to the lower fore arms holding a pomegranate and His own tusk. The seeds of the pomegranate represent the seeds of all life forms and the tusk represents advaita or the ultimate singular reality. All though there are many forms of Brahman, It is but one and is beyond description. Gam̐ is also the Gāyatrī Mātṛkā bīja (seed) mantra which represents clarity of the discerning knowledge, direct vision and eternal wisdom, masked by delusion. This bīja marks the awakening of the mūlādhāra cakra and the the beginning of the ascent of the Kuṇḍalini and the spiritual awakening within the individual beings. Vallabha means consort or his śakti called Siddhalakṣmī, who hugs Him indicating Her aspect as the dynamic super-consciousness carrying out all His actions. Lord Mahāgaṇapati is the static super-consciousness. The kalaśa or pot, which He holds by the trunk indicates all the material wealth, as well as the base mūlādhāra cakra. The trunk itself is the suṣumnā for the serpentine Kuṇḍalini to rise. He is the cause of Creation, Preservation and Destruction of the multi-dimensional multi-verse. He is depicted as red in color indicating the desire to devolve and create, from the state of super-consciousness to the individual consciousness seeded in all matter and life forms. He is shining forth with the radiance of countless suns to light up the entire Creation and He Himself is the cause of light, having descended from the unmanifested Para-Brahman.

Dear Krshna, Thank you very much for such a detailed answer. I have one follow up. In your description you say that in the second set of arms Ganesha is holding a trident. However, in the translation of the dhyana sloka I haven't found a description of a trident - "He is holding pomegrante, a club, sugarcane bow, chakra, a lotus flower, a rope, divine flowers, paddy plant, His own tusk, hugging His Consort Vallaba (vallaba means wife), a kalaśa made of precious gems."

January 04, 2019 09:04 AM
You are correct, In the context of the above dhyāna śloka, the trident does not exist. The lower left forearm hugs his consort indicating that He is not separate from His consort and śakti, Siddhalakṣmī. The other forearm is holding the tusk. We can correspond the 2nd set of arms from bottom to Mahi and Varāha, holding the pomegranate and paddy representing nourishment. The 3rd with the club and rope with Śiva and Śakti. The 4th with the sugarcane bow and blue lily (divine flowers) with Manmatha and Rati. Finally the 5th, associating the cakra and rope with Viṣṇu and Mahālakṣmī. The sugarcane bow crushing also refers to the squeezing of the ego to allow the divine nectar to flow.

Here’s what I have so far: bījapūra (pomegrante) gadekṣu (a club) kārmukarujā (sugarcane bow) cakrābja (chakra) pāśotpala (rope) vrīhyagra (rise plant) svaviṣāṇa (his own broken tusk) ratna kalaśa (a pot of jewels) prodyat (??????) karāmbhoruhaḥ (??????) dhyeyo (??????) vallabhayā (wife) sapadma-karayā (??????) śliṣṭo (??????) jvaladbhūṣayā (??????) viśvotpatti (??????) vipatti (??????) saṁsthitikaro (??????) vigneśa (master of difficulties) iṣṭārthadaḥ (the one who fulfills all the desires) Thank you!

Thank you so much for the break down. I have the following follow up questions. 1) It seems that there are two lotuses mentioned in his possession, and it's perhaps the wrong translation on my part: abja and ambhoruhaḥ. I would assume that one of them has to be a water lilly? Is that correct. The third mentioning of a lotus (sapadma-karayā), is what his wife is holding, is that correct? 2) My other question is regarding this phrase "prodyat karāmbhoruhaḥ". Even though it says here "kara", my understanding is that it's a synonym for the elephant trunk; is that correct? 3) And finally the line "viśva utpatti vipatti saṁsthitikaro" As a whole does it mean "cause of creation sustaining and annihilation of the universe"? It's kind of hard to get to that translation given that "vipatti = obstacles. Am I reading it correctly? Full translation: bījapūra >> pomegrante gadekṣu >> a club kārmukarujā >> sugarcane bow cakrābja >> chakra; abja = lotus pāśotpala >> rope vrīhyagra >> rice plant svaviṣāṇa >> his own broken tusk ratna kalaśa >> a pot of jewels prodyat >> lift up karāmbhoruhaḥ >> kara - hand, ambhoruhaḥ – lotus dhyeyo >> meditate vallabhayā >> wife sapadma-karayā >> sapadma - lotus like; karayā = hands śliṣṭo >> embraced jvalad >> blazing bhūṣayā >> adorned viśvotpatti >> viśva = universe; utpatti = origin vipatti >> obstacles saṁsthitikaro >> established vigneśa >> master of difficulties iṣṭārthadaḥ >> the one who fulfills all the desires

1. You are right Max! He is holding a lotus and a water lily. His wife Siddhalakṣmi is also holding lotuses and we can also interpret that Her hands are lotus like. The latter view is rejected by many. The point here is that the lotuses signify evolved consciousness, which is what He's embracing. When we evolve and raise our consciousness to a substantially higher spiritual levels, we come under His embrace. 2. The elephant trunk is also correct. He uses that to raise the pot of abundance and shower it upon His devotees. Significance of the elephant is wealth and abundance. This would be the best interpretation. 3. Overall, the dhyāna śloka generates this meaning. Since they're worded in Sanskrit, we sometimes have to jumble the words to get the correct meaning. This is also very common in tantra, to mislead non-initiates, by adding mantroddhāra verses, which when interpreted by their normal meanings don't make any sense, but seen esoterically as mantra derivations, give us a completely different meaning. It is very hard to find the proper meanings for many verses laden with secrets, as their meanings are either fully lost or simply hidden by practitioners who do not wish to share these secrets, to maintain their secrecy etc.

Dear Krishna, if you don’t mind indulging me in one last question, I promise )) It seems that I have incorrectly shown the translation of one word. And now I’m arriving to 11 items that Ganesha is holding, which seems to contradict with the fact that one of his hands should be holding Siddha Lakshmi. Here’s what we have: bījapūra >> (1) pomegrante gadekṣu >> (2) a club, kārmukarujā >> (3) sugarcane bow; cakrābja >> (4) cakra = chakra and abja = (5) lotus; pāśotpala >> (6) pāśa = noose, (7) utpala = blue lilly vrīhyagra >> (8) rice plant svaviṣāṇa >> (9) his own broken tusk ratna kalaśa >> (10) a pot of jewels karāmbhoruhaḥ >> kara = hand, (11) ambhoruhaḥ = lotus sapadma-karayā >> here we have another lotus which is being held by Siddha Lakshmi (that’s one of the ways to translate it, or as you said, it can be said that he has lotus like hands) Did I miss anything?

His elephant trunk is holding the jeweled pot and the seeds of Creation, that are being showered on the entire Universe. He as the Creator is spreading the seeds of Creation and as Preserver, showering the Universe with bounty. All other weapons are tools that help with the process of Sustenance and Destruction/Transformation.

Hello sir, This description of Mahaganapati is the only that matches with images/pictures can be found on the web. Can I use this as dhyanam during the Mahaganapati Japa, instead of the one described in the dhyanam verse (bījāpūra gadekṣu kārmukarujā cakrābja pāśotpala vrīhyagra svaviṣāṇa ratna kalaśa prodyat karāmbhoruhaḥ | dhyeyo vallabhayā sapadmakarayā śliṣṭojjvaladbhūṣayā viśvotpatti vipatti saṁsthitikaro vigneśa iṣṭārthadaḥ ||) If yes, could you please provide the dhyanam verse for it? Regards.

I am not clear about which description that you are referring to? If you have been given a different description or method from a practicing guru through an initiation, then you should use that description and procedure for the japa. Anything else that you find on the internet, books etc should only be used as a reference. There is no substitute for a proper initiation. If you go with a self-initiation for any reason, then follow the outlined procedures for that. Go for it only when you have exhausted all other options.

Thank you for this. Please explain how to invoke Mahaganapathy in the turmeric Ganapathi. Is there a need to use 'moola mantra with avahayami' to invoke Mahaganapathi or would the dhyana verse enough to do so? Secondly, during the sankalpa, do we just say the sankalpa or do we have to hold rice with turmeric in right hand and place on the left palm? Kindly reply ASAP.

You have to say Shri Mahaganapati avahayami, etc by chanting dhyana verse. It is like invoking during pujas. During Samkalpa, you have to hold rice mixed with turmeric powder and a bit of water (known as akshata) and then take the samkalpa.

Thank you Sir. You posted a prana pratishta method for the Uchhista Ganapathi puja in one of your articles regarding Uchhista Ganapathi, which seems complicated. Would you mind posting a simple prana pratishta mantra to invoke Mahaganapathi into the turmeric Ganapathi after the dhyana shloka?

It is not required for this Tarpaṇam. Please follow the procedures already mentioned in this document. If you are doing this on a one time basis and also wish to perform the sixteen-fold ṣoḍhaśopacāra pūja, then you need to follow all the processes associated with it. We will publish the ṣoḍhaśopacāra pūja for Mahāgaṇapati in due course of time.

The trinity of Creation, Preservation and Destruction and their śaktis (Causes/Powers) are signified. We will plan on publishing the āvaraṇa pūja to clarify all the deities, as previously requested.

I gotdeeksha of mahaganpathi from Devipuram founded by Amritananda Natha Saraswati and now maintained by his daughters. They taught me how to do the tarpanam(a little bit different than what you have written) to mahaganapathi and said I have to get right on with the tarpanam without doing japa first. They did not teach me the process of moola mantra japa and said Puraścaraṇa is not necessary because I received deeksha unless I wanted to have a darshan of Mahaganapathi. Can Tarpanam really be started without doing a sufficient amount of moola mantra Japa?

The tarpanam utilizes the mūla mantra and therefore requires an initiation. This tarpanam could be ineffective if performed without a proper initiation into the mūla mantra and āvaraṇa pūja. Guru's word is always final in these matters and you may follow what has been given to you as a dīkṣa or upadeśa.

Jai Ambe AJAHAS Unless they have changed things, what is normally taught by Guruji Amritanandanatha Saraswati is what is written in the Parasurama Kalpa Sutra. Guruji Amritanandanatha would give Mahaganapati and Bala Tripura Sundari together. He would have students pay special attention to the Mahaganapati tarpanam because Sri Ganesha loves tarpanam and it is a great way to gain his favor. If they gave you Mahaganapati then you need to do 100,000 japam of this mantra before progressing forward. This applies to Balas 6 letter mantra as well as he didn't give the 9 letter mantra afaik. Purascarana was not perscribed by Guruji. If you want to, you can do it. But you have to follow the step by step path that leads to your Ishtadevata. Anyways, for the most part, the step by step process is followed at Devipuram. As far as your last question goes, it is perfectly fine to do the tarpanam from the very beginning. Now, Karunamayi guruji would say something like, you should be able to do 100,000 japam in the 45 days you're doing tarpanam. If you cannot do that, then please just continue with Mahaganapati until 100,000 is completed. Please make sure you are doing his complete sadhana including nyasa-s. You can find that here: https://manblunder.com/articlesview/sri-maha-ganapati-mantra-japa I will also suggest that even after you get to 100,000 japam that you continue to do his mantra for the rest of you life. If that is to much to do along with the devi mantra your guru prescribes, then at least worship him once a week. Mahaganapati's job is to make sure you get to Lalitambika at all costs. If that's your goal, then he is your best friend. Jai Ambe Jai Gurudev
