Śrī Bhuvaneśvarī Aṣṭottaraśatanāmāvalī

(श्री भुवनेश्वरी अष्टोत्तरशतनामावली)

Prologue - Śrī Bhuvaneśvarī Devi is the fourth Daśamahāvidyā as per the specifications of the Toḍāla tantra. There are other śāstras (scriptures) that list different numbers and deities, but the most popularly followed are the Daśamahāvidyās. The word ‘vidyā’ literally means knowledge and it also an attribute that is assigned to the mantras of the Divine Feminine (Śakti). The Supreme Divine Mother Parāśakti, also referred to as Śakti, devolves from a dimensionless state of pure consciousness (Super-consciousness) into time, energy and matter. The Divine Mother Parāśakti manifests various universes called as brahmāṇḍas, meaning cosmic eggs. Each brahmāṇḍa has its own set of trinities to carry out the functions of Creation, Sustenance and Destruction (Annihilation and Resurrection) and there are also many dimensional worlds called lokas. The devolution is extremely complex as the Divine Mother manifests Herself as Time (Samaya), trinities, various śaktis carrying out designated responsibilities and the manifestation of space and matter with the aid of the energy śaktis. Within the constituent sentient beings itself, the designation of powers to various entities such as devas, daityas, yoginis, piśācas, siddhas etc. residing in the numerous lokas is very complex and there is a constant interplay among these higher entities and the lower beings such as ourselves.

Although the Super-consciousness (Brahman/Parabrahman) permeates everything and is everywhere and ever-present, the awareness of itself is absent in the devolved matter and amongst the sentient beings. This happens due to the presence of Mahā-māyā, the fabric of cosmic illusion that deludes everything present in the brahmāṇḍa, from realizing its true self and to continue in the process of evolution and quest to find their true origin through the cycle of life and death and transformation from the lowest non-sentient matter to the sentient and further to the higher intelligent beings. Karmic actions play an important role in the evolution and determine the direction of ascension or descension.

The word bhuvana means sentient beings, dwellings, cosmos and the worlds. The words ‘bhūr’, ‘bhuvaḥ’ and ‘svaḥ’ refers to the Earth and the nether-worldly realms, atmospheric worlds and the heavenly realms. Other interpretations point to the triads such as the states of waking, sleep and deep sleep, as well as the physical, astral and causal bodies. In other words, all triads manifested by the Divine Mother Tripura Sundarī and removed by the grace of the Divine Mother Tripura Bhairavī, are subtly referred by the same term ‘bhuvana’. The word ‘īśvarī’ means the ruler, lord, controller etc. The Divine Mother Śrī Bhuvaneśvarī Devi is the Lord and ruler of all realms and the denizens within.

The Divine Mother Śrī Bhuvaneśvarī Devi is none other than the Divine Mother Śrī Mahā-māyā. Her seed (bīja) mantra hrīm̐, also called the tantra praṇava, is the seed of power. This bīja mantra can completely transform one’s fate and help an individual attain dizzying heights of success in any field and amass power, recognition, money, status and anything of importance. The ghaṭārgala yantra of Śrī Bhuvaneśvarī Devi, is especially famed for conferring abundance upon the sincere sādhakas. The mantras of Śrī Bhuvaneśvarī Devi not only bestow material prosperity, health, education and general wellbeing, but are also the key to unlock the spiritual realms, with the grace of the Divine Mother Śrī Mahā-māyā.

The various attributes of Śrī Bhuvaneśvarī Devi equate Her to be none other than the Highest Supreme eternal reality – Parāśakti. They also describe Her powers to help the sincere devotees (sādhakas) obtain all their cherished wishes and finally realize their own true nature and get absorbed into Her. Liberation is impossible without the grace of the Divine Mother Śrī Mahā-māyā, who is none other than a form of Śrī Tripura Sundarī, who is none other than Śakti.

All Daśamahāvidyās are forms of Śakti and are equally capable of fulfilling any and all wishes of their sincere devotees. Following the proper procedure (krama) of worship (sādhana) including mantra japa, yantra āvaraṇa puja, stotra recitations etc. are critical to ensure success in attaining the objectives.

Our sincere gratitude to Shri Sean, who lovingly gave this document with the decoded meanings. We are also indebted to Shri Krishna guruji of Medhayoga for his input, as well as to Shri Krishnakanth ji for the proof-reading and suggestions. May the sincere sādhakas benefit immensely by the grace of the Divine Mother Śrī Bhuvaneśvarī.
