Dear Sir, Namaste! You may recite a few mālas, preferably a fixed number of them, say 5 or 10 or any other number as per your convenience and continue this for a period of time to complete the prescribed number of japa and then follow through with the other rituals. It is possible that you may skip the recitation on some days and that is generally okay. It is best to choose the same time for mantra japa, when you are free from other tasks and can spare some time. This should not be immediately after a meal, but at least an hour or so or after a heavy meal. Also, please look up the breathing techniques based articles that will help you slow down the breath and focus more on the mantra japa sādhana.

Follow as per your guru's direction. Do not chant the mantra without a proper initiation. Mantra Pañcāṅga of Āvaraṇa pūja, stotram, kavacam, paṭala must be followed along with japa for proper realization of any tantric mantra.

This mantra requires an initiation and it can definitely lead one towards self-realization. The initiating guru will guide you on the process of recitation. The process should be followed every day from the top to the bottom. The main mantra is the one that is recited many times over and the same count is maintained every day.

What is the impact of the daily count is somewhat variable, or days are occasionally missed? There is still some effectiveness I hope. Or is the progress and merit largely lost?

It is best to follow the prescribed schedule daily. It is a huge commitment and undertaking for those who have taken up the task of performing a puraścaraṇa. Normally a puraścaraṇa is completed within 40 to 45 days and a couple of grace days for missing the japa are included in it. If you have undertaken to complete the puraścaraṇa in a period of 6 months to 1 year or so, then a day or two every month maybe okay. Keep the daily recitation count low, to ensure that you have the time to recite in your busy schedule. Also consider performing the Āvaraṇa Pūja, Kavacam and any important stotras of the deity on a regular basis.

Many thanks. Very tangentially, for success in Japa and with other forms of related practice, would it be more efficient to first spend a year or two getting a functional grasp on Sanskrit and breathing techniques, before proceeding to mantra japa under a guru?

It is best to learn under a guru and seek their guidance for the mantra japa and associated techniques. It gives us confidence that there are people practicing these techniques for ages (lineage) and also hear experiences from other sādhakas.
