Śrī Mahāvārāhī Aṣṭottaraśatanāmāvali

(श्री महावाराही अष्टोत्तरशतनामावलि) – Variation 4

Acknowledgments – Shri Lorran for providing the text of the Śrī Mahāvārāhī Aṣṭottaraśatanāma Stotram with two variations. The second acknowledgment goes to Śrī Yogāmba sameta Śrī Ātmānandanātha (Shri Ramesh Kutticad) whose book – “Meditative Texts”, has served as the primary reference for much of the content of this article.

Note – The associated Śrī Mahāvārāhī Aṣṭottaraśatanāma Stotram associated with this nāmāvali is more like a regular stotram extolling the greatness of the Divine Mother Śrī Mahāvārāhī and not merely listing Her attributes. Also, there appears to be a phalaśruti at śloka 15 from the second line. The very last śloka seems to end the nāmāvali with a few attributes. In the process of obtaining the attributes, we failed to fetch the exact number of 108, so I had to dig in to the phalaśruti section and take some attributes from there to close in on 108. It became 126 as I felt I should include more content. The accuracy or the lack thereof, is entirely my own doing. I was assisted by Shri Ramesh Kutticad ji in obtaining about 70 attributes, which I later conjoined to form bigger attributes, due to their close link in describing the associated form of the Divine Mother.

Another unique feature of this stotram, is the description of the first few Āvaraṇas and their associated deities. Some of the attributes described in this nāmāvali are also present in the 3rd variation as well.

Prologue – The Śrī Mahāvārāhī Aṣṭottaraśatanāma Stotram and its derivative Śrī Mahāvārāhī Aṣṭottaraśatanāmāvali containing over 108 attributes are part of an esoteric and very secretive practice known as Śrīvidyā. It falls in the realm of tantra and worship of the Divine Mother in various forms. Technically it falls in the realm of Śākta texts. Any Aṣṭottaraśatanāma derives itself from the associated tantras, purāṇas, kalpas and other related texts. It is essentially a summary of the more elaborate Sahasranāma, that constitutes a thousand attributes of the deity. Studying the Aṣṭottaraśatanāma and other such attribute texts helps the sincere sādhaka (devotee) to enrich their practice of mantra japa and in the process earn the divine grace of the deity.

Śrī Mahāvārāhī along with Śrī Rājaśyāmala form the closest perimeter to the Divine Mother Śrī Lalitā and obtaining their grace, is the same as that of the ultimate reality - Śrī Lalitā. Śrī Mahāvārāhī is responsible for providing us a body to experience the karmas that we are saddled with from timeless births. With Her grace the sincere devotees gain self-realization and liberation by extinguishing all the karma from previous and current birth, thereby ending the infinite cycle of birth and death. Besides the spiritual benefits, the Divine Mother is also invoked for getting rid of all enemies, both internal and external as well as gaining immense wealth, property, health and higher status in the society. Both spiritual and material benefits are gained by praying sincerely to the Divine Mother. It is our hope that this offering serves the stated purpose.

The transformation of one's individuality from a vastly materialistic outlook to a non-egoistic and deeply spiritualistic endeavor, is the metaphor for liquor that the Divine Mother relishes in. The cerebral amṛta oozing from the skull cavity causing intense joy and bliss, is also equated with the madya that the Divine Mother relishes. We are all born with karma inherited over numerous births (Prārabdha karma) and continue to accumulate more karma in every birth fixating us to the cycle of life and death. Even for a spiritually elevated person, some karma can only be expended by taking birth as a human or as other humanoid or similarly conscious beings. A human is composed of a body, mind and faculties of sensory perception. The meat (māṃsa) referred to here is the metaphor for a higher birth such as that of a spiritually minded person who directs their focus towards the Divine Mother to become one with Her. This is most pleasing to the Divine Mother who is very fond of all the spiritual persons (māṃsa) who surrender unto Her.
