Jagan-maṅgala Nāma Śrī Mahā Pratyaṅgirā Kavaca Stotram

  (जगन्मङ्गल नाम श्री महा प्रत्यङ्गिरा कवच स्तोत्रम्) -

Prologue – This kavacam (Shield of armor) called Jagan-maṅgala Nāma Śrī Mahā Pratyaṅgirā Kavaca Stotram, belongs to the class of extremely powerful and most potents stotras, which are also considered as mantras in their own right – mālā mantras. By definition, these powerful stotra mantras are to be recited only upon receiving a proper initiation and obtaining the consent of one’s own guru. In addition, the devotee should first practice a regular initiated mantra, which in this case can be any Śrī Mahā Pratyaṅgirā Devi mantras, that the guru sees fit, for the disciple to recite. Along with the mantra, the devotee must also perform the appropriate yantra āvaraṇa rituals, to gain access and permission to recite any kavaca of this class.

In dire times when one is completely helpless and facing life threatening situations and/or abject poverty, extreme hardships in their material and spiritual progress and simply unable to fulfill the pre-requisites, one may pray to the Divine Mother with full sincerity, to seek Her forgiveness for not following the pre-requisites and request for Her permission to proceed with the recitation of this stotram, or any others of this class/type.

It should be duly noted, that when one is out of danger and is in a position to follow the prescribed rituals, the same must not be skipped for any reason and should be duly fulfilled, to avoid any repurcussions in future.

Jagan-maṅgala denotes victory and auspiciousness in the entire realm of existence. This kavacam therefore has the ability to obtain anything that one may desire or long for. In particular, the Divine Mother Śrī Mahā Pratyaṅgirā Devi, is propitiated for getting rid of all types of enemies, internal and external, reversing the effects of black magic, as well as for ensuring victory in all undertakings, competitions etc. This particular kavacam is extremely effective in fighting incurable and highly dangerous and life threatening diseases and adverse health conditions.

May the Divine Mother bless all Her sincere devotees to overcome all the hurdles in life and also live life to the fullest extent! May they gain immensely in all walks of life and lead a balanced material and spiritual life and ultimately gain liberation by Her benevolent grace!

Meaning:- May the divine mother Śrī Mahā Pratyāṅgirā devī, adorning a dark grayish, smoky complexion, bearing the Vedas in one arm and a skull in another, illuminating the knowledge of all the vedas, bearing the resemblance of a lion with a wide gaping mouth and powerful jaws, holding a trident with serpents coiled over Her arms, shoulders and head, holding a drum whose vibrations align the stars and galaxies, sporting very large, sharp and diamond teeth, with a large fiery red tongue sticking out, breathing heavily and emitting fire and also representing the combined knowledge of the great divine mothers Sāvitrī and Gāyatrī, to whom we offer our humble obeisance, shower Her divine grace upon us all and destroy all diseases, poverty and negativity within and around us!

Her dark smoky complexion represents the vast and infinite space, dark matter and all the subtle forces manifested in the entire Creation. The Vedas represent all the spiritual knowledge that can lead us towards self-realization. The skull represents an empty mind bereft of ego, pride and all attachments and also representing a receptacle ready to be filled with Divine bliss and the True knowledge of the Absolute! The wide gaping mouth and the sharp diamond teeth represent all the subtle energies manifested by the Divine Mother to consume our karmas and remove all negative influences. The trident helps pierce all the triads of the entire Creation, helping us overcome them, as well as gaining prominence and victory in all aspects. The long tongue consumes all our thoughts and extraneous activities and brings stability in our pursuits. The confluence of all knowledge within Her signifies Her Supremacy and ability to confer the same upon us, to help excel in the material and spiritual pursuits. Finally, with Her Divine grace and blessings, we will become victorious in overcoming the greatest of hurdles, diseases, poverty and all types of miseries.

Without any doubt through Her grace, one will become prosperous, wealthy and successful in all aspects of life!

The divine Mother appears with Her consort Bhairava as a dot (bindu) at the center of the Śrī Pratyaṅgirā devi yantra, surrounded by two triangles in opposite directions. Further surrounding them is a larger inverted triangle, with five triangles appearing all around the three sides of this large inverted triangle. The sixteen lotuses around a circle combined with the palace gates (bhūpura), makes up the yantra of Śrī Pratyaṅgirā devi. All the cries and wails of sincere sādhakas, who are honorable, pure and truthful persons will be set to rest and their enemies, both internal and external, will be relegated to hell.

The wise and intelligent, follow the discipline and procedures of worship set forth by the blessed emperor and conqueror of all realms, Śrī Rāvaṇa Brahma, in worshipping the yantra before reciting the Śrī Pratyaṅgirā devi kavacam. Those who do not, may soon suffer immensely and get condemned to hell or Yama loka, to take residence amongst deceitful souls.

(There are many variations of the Śrī Pratyaṅgirā devi yantra. The reference is to the Mahā Pratyaṅgirā devi yantra).

महीपुरान् पूर्वमेव द्वा त्रिम्शत् पत्र मालिखेत् ॥ ९ ॥

The application of the kavacam would be invalid without the āvaraṇa puja and therefore does not come to fruition.

(The Śrī Pratyaṅgirā devi yantra āvaraṇa pūja must be performed prior to the recitation of the kavacam).

Before applying any of the recommended procedures of Śrī Pratyaṅgirā devi, for annihilation of enemies or for acquiring immense fortune, One must cease from all other activities and continue with the preparation of the Śrī Pratyaṅgirā devi yantra, by inserting thirty two petals housing the āvaraṇa (enclosure) deities, followed by the enclosure gates to the above yantra. By doing so in this manner, the Divine Mother’s grace is invoked, to facilitate the fulfillment of all wishes and to gain immense protection.

[Raghunātha is another name for Śrī  Rāma. All the references of this Kavacam containing this śloka (verse) reference Raghunātha bīja. The composer of this hymn Meghanāda (Indrajita), son of emperor and conqueror of all realms, Śrī Rāvaṇa Brahma, an enemy of Śrī Rāma, would not have used His reference in all probability. Also, there is no Raghunātha bīja mentioned in the tantric dictionaries that are currently available to us. The stotram itself was probably invoked and perfected by Śrī Rāvaṇa Brahma, who may have likely used it to facilitate his conquests. If used in the context of Śrī Raghunātha bīja, then it would be for gaining the protection equivalent of Śrī Rāma’s bīja mantra rām̐.

In my personal opinion, it is probably the Ratinātha bīja klīm̐, referencing Lord Kāma and indicating the  fulfillment of all our cherished desires and wishes.]

The yantra is to be enclosed within the palace gates (bhūpura). At the end of the bhūpura, the bījā kṣmrūṃ should be evenly written on all the four sides of the palace gates. The wise and intelligent, will also write the bhadrakāli mantra to invoke the complete grace of Śrī Atharvaṇa Bhadrakāli Pratyaṅgirā Devi and transform it into Her mantra by adding the appropriate syllables and will also undertake the efforts of performing the rituals to infuse life into the yantra.

Śrī Atharvaṇa Bhadrakāli Pratyaṅgirā must be worshipped along with the avaraṇa deities, who are none other than the various manifestations of Her and Her consort Lord Mahā-bhairava (Śiva). All of them must be duly worshipped to invoke their complete grace.
