Meaning: This is a forty-eight syllabled mantra with some syllables representing bīja (seed) mantras. The parts of the main mantra including the bījas are described below. –
- The bīja (seed) mantra om̐ (ॐ) consists of – ‘au’ => healing and deep cleansing, ‘m̐’ => removes misery. Ushers in auspiciousness.
- The Māyā bīja (seed) mantra hrīm̐ (ह्रीँ) consists of – ‘h’ => Brahman/Śiva, ‘r’ => fire and drive within us, ‘ī’ => energy and the source of all power that helps us ascend, ‘m̐’ => removal of all miseries and facilitator of self-realization and ultimate liberation.
- The words “dakṣiṇāmūrtaye tubhyaṃ (दक्षिणामूर्तये तुभ्यं)” mean – “unto His Lordship Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti.
- The mantra bījas – “ka e ī la hrīṃ (क ए ई ल ह्रीं)” refer to the Vāgbhāva Kūṭa of the sacred Śrī Pañcadaśākṣarī Śrīvidyā mantra. The detailed description of this Kūṭa is mentioned here and here.
- The words “vaṭa mūla nivāsine (वट मूल निवासिने)“ - denote His seated presence under a banyan tree.
- The mantra bījas – “ha sa ka ha la hrīṃ (ह स क ह ल ह्रीं)” refer to the Kāmarāja Kūṭa of the sacred Śrī Pañcadaśākṣarī Śrīvidyā mantra. The detailed description of this Kūṭa is mentioned here and here.
- The words “dhyānaika niratāṅgāya (ध्यानैक निरताङ्गाय)” denote His pleasing appearance and well-proportioned physical body.

- The bīja (seed) mantra namo (नमो) refers to our salutations to the Divine and constitutes a bond that is nurtured in our heart.
- The word “rudrāya (रुद्राय)” refers to the Destroyer Lord Rudra, who is responsible for destruction and transformation. The destruction of ego and bad karma, as well as the transformation and awakening into our true spiritual selves is denoted by Lord Rudra.
- The word “śambhave (शम्भवे)” refers to the most benevolent and happiness granting aspect of Lord Rudra. The connotation here is that Lord Dakṣiṇāmūrti is Lord Rudra.
- The bīja (seed) mantras hrīm̐ and om̐ are repeated and reversed to lock in and seal the benefits of this mantra.
Salutations to the highly revered Divine Father in the form of Śrī Śrīvidyā Dakṣiṇāmūrti (form of Lord Śiva and the Divine Mother Śakti) to bestow upon us prudence, wisdom and spiritual knowledge and also lead us towards liberation from the bindings of the mundane world!
He grants spiritual knowledge and transforms us completely and makes us realize that we are none other than the blemish-less and pure super-consciousness, known as Brahman.
The concept of Śiva-Śakti-aikya is also seen in the mixing of the Śrī Pañcadaśākṣarī mantra of Śrī Lalitā Devī with the Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti mantra, to frame the 48 lettered mantra of Śrī Śrīvidyā Dakṣiṇāmūrti.
The 48 lettered Śrī Śrīvidyā Dakṣiṇāmūrti mantra should be recited at least 108 times. Initiation is essential.
