Meaning: Salutations to the Divine Mother who skillfully plays a jewel studded Vīṇā. She is in a highly intoxicated spiritual state, appears extremely beautiful and charming. In this state, She utters very soft words that become melodious music. She appears very majestic and is dark blue/green complexioned with a well proportionate body. She is the daughter of sage Mataṅga. May we meditate upon Her in our mind and consciousness.
She is the holder of the musical instrument Vīṇā. This lute type instrument has 24 frets representing the syllables of the Gāyatrī mantra. There are four melody strings that represent the holy Vedas. Also, there are three drone strings on the side, that signify the three nāḍīs or spiritual channels in the body that facilitate the rise of the Kuṇḍalini. They are the central channel Suṣumnā, the right channel Piṅgalā and the left Iḍā. The stem of the Vīṇā itself represents the spine along which the Kuṇḍalini flows. The music from the Vīṇā signifies all the frequencies and wavelengths of the entire Creation. Her spiritually intoxicated state, is the highest spiritual state of super-consciousness. Her dark complexion can be compared with the vast and infinite empty space and the state of pure consciousness alone. Mataṅga also represents the deep spiritually intoxicated state.

ऐँ नमः उच्छिष्टचाण्डालि मातङ्गि सर्व वशङ्करि स्वाहा ।
Meaning:-
aim̐ (ऐँ) is the Aiśvarya mātṛkā and Sarasvatī bīja indicating wealth and also represents and bestows immense knowledge, mastery in arts and amazing creativity.
namaḥ (नमः) is the salutations bīja mantra, marking our deep reverence to the deity.
ucchiṣṭa-cāṇḍāli (उच्छिष्टचाण्डालि) is a name attributed to the Divine Mother to signify that She devours (cāṇḍāli) the leftovers (ucchiṣṭa). The leftovers are a reference to our karma that needs to be destroyed for us to gain freedom from the causal body and get liberated. The word ucchiṣṭa also signifies the unmanifested Brahman. In this context, the Divine Mother is often paired with Ucchiṣṭa Gaṇapati, a highly revered and spiritually intoxicated form of Lord Gaṇeśa.
mātaṅgi (मातङ्गि) – is another epithet of the Divine Mother denoting the ninth aspect of the Daśamahāvidyās – the ten wisdom goddesses. She is stated to be in a spiritually intoxicated state, since She represents the state that cannot be described by words but can only be experienced. It is a state beyond the deep sleep in the context of meditation. This is a state when we begin to experience our own consciousness and the realization of it being part of the super-consciousness begins to dawn upon us. This is the knowledge that the Divine Mother bestows upon us.
sarva vaśaṅkari (सर्व वशङ्करि) – the One who attracts everything and everyone!
svāhā (स्वाहा) – the Vahni (fire energy) bīja signifies oblations to the Divine and a complete surrender and submission of ourselves in the service of the Divine Mother.

Thanks you very much Krishnaji. It was very useful esp. "ucchista chandali" description above. If possible, please consider writing a few lines about each shyamala form, who they are, what their role is etc.,

I updated both the articles with a description. All the 8 forms are aṅgas (accessories) of Śrī Rāja Śyāmalā. Worshipping them allows us to gain siddhi (fruition) of Her mantras.

Thank you so much Krishnaji. am really thankful for your articles/responses/insights. If my memory serves me right, I remember somewhere Raviji suggested not to do more than one Tantric mantra at a time. How come Shyamala upasakas worship with 9 mantras in 9 days especially you mentioned purascharana count of 1 lakh each in your articles. Also, are 9 purascharanas done sequentially?

All the 8 forms of Śrī Rāja Śyāmalā are worshipped with a 1/10th japa count of what is performed for Śrī Rāja Śyāmalā. For instance, if we recite 1 mālā of 108 counts of Śrī Rāja Śyāmalā, we may recite 10 or 11 counts of Śrī Laghu Śyāmalā mantra etc. Those interested in the individual deity Puraścaraṇa, can follow the mantra japa procedures for the specific deity accordingly. During the Navarātri, this special sādhana is done for the individual forms, where the entire procedure for the day specific deity is performed. The japa count is left to the capacity of the sādhaka. During the normal recitation of Śrī Rāja Śyāmalā mantras, there is no need to follow the complete procedures of Her aṅga devatas. Instead just the mantras can be recited as a 1/10th count (daśāṃsa).

Namaste Krishnaji, I wanted to ask a clarification in section 18 above. You mention “ In this context, the Divine Mother is often paired with Ucchiṣṭa Gaṇapati, a highly revered and spiritually intoxicated form of Lord Gaṇeśa.” By this statement, did you mean that the mantra sadhana of Laghu Syamala is performed concurrently to Ucchista Ganapati for maximal impact? Thanks for the clarification.

The respective sādhanās can be done independently. The pairing context is only to specify that She is His consort hastipiśāci. Note that Ucchiṣṭa MahāGaṇapati is perceived as Lord Śiva and paired with all the Mahāvidyās.

Thank you very much for elaborating each and every word of the mantra. Can I chant Laghu Shyamala mantra with Twarita mantra, like Twarita mantra in morning and Laghu Shyamala mantra in night? Please guide me with the best time for each of these mantras and whether they can be chanted simultaneously.

I am not aware of any such procedure followed by the traditions that I have encountered so far. You may follow what is suggested by your guru. Reciting these mantras without a proper initiation may not yield any meaningful results and sometimes may even lead to harm, as suggested in the tantras.

"Śrī Laghu Śyāmalā is the primary attendant and charioteer of Śrī Rāja Śyāmalā." - if I'm not mistaken the charioteer is Hasanti.

Although I'm still confused as to the description of the 1st Avarana in Chapter 19 of Lalitopakhyana which says "Saṅgītayoginī is mentioned as the most beloved deity of Śrīdevī. Her abode was a seat in the middle of the step in the chariot Geyacakra. The same first step was the place of residence of Mantriṇī.” It’s interesting because Saṅgītayoginī is not mentioned in Parasurama Kalpa Sutra and is not worshipped in Raja Shyamala yantra puja.

You may check Surendra Saṃhitā, Śrīvidyārṇava Tantram and other related Śrīvidyā texts, besides the Telugu books for more information. The explanations are based on Shri Ravi guruji's teachings as well as Shri Ramesh Kutticad guruji's Meditative Thoughts book, which is one of my primary sources for explanation of dhyana ślokas.

You can locate the book on the Chaukhamba web site or exoticindia.com and purchase it. I suggest you check out the contents. Most of the mantras that I could find, I have already published. There may be some stotras that we haven't published yet, but you might be able to find them on Sanskritdocuments.org or Stotranidhi etc. You would need to explore,

Can Shri Ramesh Kutticad be approached by anyone? Is it possible to contact him online, and if so, would it be acceptable and not bothersome to do so?
