Recite the following guru mantra once, to seek the blessings of all gurus and the Guru.
oṃ hrīṃ siddhaguro prasīda hrīṃ oṃ
ॐ ह्रीं सिद्धगुरो प्रसीद ह्रीं ॐ
9.navārṇa mantra ( नवार्ण मन्त्र ) :-
The 9 lettered mantra is –
hasti piśāci likhe svāhā
हस्ति पिशाचि लिखे स्वाहा
The above mantra should be recited using the above consecrated japa māla. The māla should have 108 beads plus a meru or head bead. The count is from the meru bead and back. The meru bead itself should not be counted. When the count reaches the meru, flip the māla, to count in reverse and so on, for the decided number of māla counts.
Mantra meaning:-
The meaning of the mantra is “One who’s in union with hastipiśāci", signifying the śiva-śakti-aikya aspect of Brahman. This is the state of the union of both the dynamic and static super consciousness, signifying supreme bliss or liberation or Brahman Itself. The sound of brahman is oṃ also called śabda brahman. Since this mantra itself signifies Brahman, no prefix of OM is necessary for this mantra. When oṃ is prefixed to this mantra, it becomes the 10 syllabled mantra, which is equivally effective as this mantra.

Small question shouldn't om be included for the Mula mantra?

The essence of the mantra represents Brahman itself. Adding oṃ or śabda brahman, makes this the 10 lettered mantra, which is more popular and widely used than the 9 lettered mantra. We will post this mantra next, as part 5 of this series.

The ten lettered mantra has oṃ in front. Please do homam on the mantra initiated to you, by your guru.

Namaste. Excuse for troubling. Can you tell me how to perform tantric japa mantras with tarpana, marjana and brahmanas? I sort of figured out the Vedic tarpana, but I can’t understand how to make tarpana to complete the full purushcarana.

For Puraścaraṇa, the process includes Mantra japa, homam, tarpaṇa, mārjaṇa and brāhmaṇa bhojana. Homam is performed by invoking the fire god Agni, consecrating the fire pit etc. and finally invoking the deity and offering Homam with the japa mantra, by appending 'svāhā' at the end. For instance, for this particular 9 lettered mantra, the homam should be invoked as "hasti piśāci likhe svāhā svāhā". Note that "svāhā" is suffixed even if the mantra ends with one. For Tarpaṇa, Lord Varuṇa, the god of water/oceans must be invoked and a special vessel called viśeṣa arghya must be consecrated and the contents of which are used for this ritual. The japa mantra is suffixed with the deity name in the second case (Sanskrit nomenclature) followed by "tarpayāmi namaḥ". For this mantra, the relevant Tarpaṇa mantra would be "hasti piśāci likhe svāhā ucchiṣṭa gaṇapatim tarpayāmi namaḥ" For mārjaṇa, also called Abhiṣeka, the deity in the second case followed by "abhiṣiñcāmi" must be suffixed at the end of the japa mantra. For this mantra, it would be "hasti piśāci likhe svāhā ucchiṣṭa gaṇapatim abhiṣiñcāmi". The Bhojana part is to feed pious people, to get their blessings to help remove any wrong doings in the entire Puraścaraṇa process. The detailed procedures are listed in many Tantra manuals and particularly well illustrated in Mantra Mahodadhi. We will try to publish the detailed procedures applicable to all deities in a separate article, when time allows.

This mantra should not be practiced without a proper guidance from a guru. I would recommend that you look for another mantra that can be obtained from a suitable guru. You may also choose stotras that do not require an initiation. A sādhana does not begin without a proper initiation.

Hello sir , in the karanyasa , the nyasas are starting with OM. Do we need to include Om here when the actual navarana mantra does not have om. Can you please clarify this doubt for me.

You can remove 'oṃ' in the nyāsas for this base variation of the mantra. In retrospect, it should not have been added in the first place. I practiced it in that manner and hence included it as such.

Hello sir- I have been trying to find the actual meaning for the given dhyana slokam. I was able derive the first line meaning but not the second line - from “karairdhadhanam saraseru hastham “ - how do we need to interpret this part?

The dhyāna śloka has been explained in this article. If you are looking for meaning of each individual words, then I would recommend that you go through Mantra Mahodadhih by Shri Ram Kumar Rai. You may find more details there. You can also lookup a Sanskrit dictionary for the literal meaning of each word. You would need to split some sandhis here and there. We have not adopted the approach of splitting each work of the ślokas and providing their meaning for the mantra japa articles.
